What strategies or resources do you use to help your class/program be responsive to cultural diversity and English Language Learners?
In an ever changing world, we have to be prepared for everything. As student teachers in the spring, we were assigned to ask our virtual mentor team the above question. Who knows what will happen and what kind of students you will have the opportunity to work with.
As a teacher, you have to connect to all of your students no matter where they come from. Here are some great nuggets of knowledge from my mentor team and my cooperating teacher!
Mr. Haussener
- currently has a foreign exchange student
- pair with helpful student for certain activities
- try to find something he really enjoys
Dr. McLean
- currently has Vietnamese student
- have him watch and listen to others
- uses Google translate for directions but has both languages on it
- modify assignment
- school serves military base, students have lived in many different countries
- in foods, open discussion to how different religions have different experiences (meat vs. no meat, dairy vs. no dairy)
- Her classroom vision statement is "Learn Together. Grow Together. Open Eyes."
- above points embody this!!
My Entire Virtual Mentor Team
- treat them with the same respect as others but give them the attention they need to understand and learn
Sara, your team gives you some great examples and advice for how to work with ELL students and make them feel welcome in the ag classroom. Which pieces of information did you find the most useful and applicable for your student teaching internship? What resources did your team share that you could see yourself using in the future?
ReplyDeleteHi Sara, as a teacher it is important to know what your students' parents' expectations for their children. Grades, behavior, adult/child interactions, etc. that are acceptable and occur regularly in American culture are not the same as those of from other ethnic backgrounds. As a teacher not only will you be interacting with the students, but with the parents as well.
ReplyDeleteSara, while this topic can be a challenge it is very important. While it is vital to accommodate learners from different cultures and different languages, this is also an opportunity for you and your students to learn from these different cultures.
